Paul WeeksIn 2018, photographer Naomi Harris set off on a 70 day journey along a fur trade route from Quebec to Thunder Bay via canoe. She was inspired by 19th century Canadian artist Frances Anne Hopkins, and the voyages she went on with her husband and the Voyageurs. The project explored what it would have been like to be a female artist in the 19th century, and if the art world has changed since.
The identity we created for the exhibition focuses on comparing the past and present. We juxtaposed a script typeface, reminiscent of 19th century ephemera, with a rigid modernist typographic system. We also created illustrations inspired by cameos—decorative silhouettes that were very popular in that time period. The design of the brochure responds to the physicality of a classic fold out map.
